5 Fun U7 Warm-Up Drills (No Lines, No Laps)
The first 10 minutes of a U7 soccer practice can be a nightmare. Kids are arriving late, crying, looking for their parents, or chasing butterflies.
If you start with “Everyone get on the line and stretch,” you have already lost them.
The Golden Rule of U7 Warm-Ups: The warm-up must be a Game. It must involve a Ball. And it must start the second the first kid arrives.
Here are 5 fun U7 warm-up drills that require zero setup time and get 100% engagement immediately.
Navigation Note: These warm-ups are just the start!

1. The Jungle Trek (Follow the Leader)
Best for: When kids are arriving one by one. Setup: Coach has a ball. Every player has a ball.

- The Story: “I am the Jungle Explorer. You must follow my path exactly. Do not fall off the cliff!”
- The Action: The Coach dribbles around the field in snaking lines, circles, and zig-zags. The players must follow behind in a “snake” formation.
- The Twist: Every 30 seconds, do a “Jungle Action”:
- Duck under a branch! (Crouch low)
- Jump over a log! (Jump over ball)
- Run from a tiger! (Sprint for 3 seconds)
2. Hospital Tag (The Favorite)
Best for: High energy and laughter. Setup: Grid (20x20m). No balls initially (or can be played with balls for advanced groups).

- The Story: “If you get tagged, you have a boo-boo!”
- The Action: Play tag inside the grid.
- The Rules:
- If you get tagged on the arm, you must hold your arm with one hand and keep running.
- If you get tagged on the leg, you must hop on one leg.
- If you get tagged a third time, you go to the “Hospital” (run to the coach, do 5 toe-taps, and you are “healed” to rejoin).
3. Simon Says (Soccer Edition)
Best for: Listening skills and body mechanics. Setup: Players scattered in front of the coach.

- The Story: “Only do what Simon says!”
- The Action: Coach calls out commands.
- “Simon says… Toe Taps!” (Tap top of ball with sole of foot).
- “Simon says… Foundations!” (Knock ball between feet).
- “Simon says… Sit on your ball!”
- “Knee on the ball!” (If they do it without “Simon Says,” they do a funny dance as a penalty).
4. The “Tick-Tock” Challenge
Best for: Technical ball mastery. Setup: Every player with a ball in a circle.

- The Challenge: “Can you beat your record?”
- The Action:
- Level 1: Tick-Tocks (Passing ball between inside of left/right foot). Count how many in 10 seconds.
- Level 2: Toe Taps (Touching top of ball). Count how many in 10 seconds.
- Level 3: The Roll (Roll ball with sole of foot from left to right).
- Coach Tip: Yell out the time countdown loudly: “5… 4… 3… 2… 1… STOP! Who got more than 10?”
5. Freeze Tag (Dribbling)
Best for: Heads-up dribbling. Setup: 2 “Ice Monsters” (Defenders) without balls. Everyone else has a ball.

- The Story: “Don’t let the Ice Monster freeze you!”
- The Action: Players dribble around the grid.
- The Freeze: If an Ice Monster touches you (or your ball), you must freeze with your legs wide open (The Ice Tunnel).
- The Cure: Another player must kick their ball through your legs to “unfreeze” you.
See It in Action: Chaos = Fun (U7 Warm Up Drills)
Sometimes it is hard to visualize how “organized chaos” works on the field. You might worry that the kids are just running wild.
Watch this short video (especially the “Marbles” game at the end) to see exactly what a good U7 session looks like: High energy, everyone moving, and zero lines.
Summary: Start Fast, Start Fun
The goal of a U7 warm-up is not “fitness.” They are already fit. The goal is engagement. If you start with a game like Hospital Tag or Jungle Trek, you capture their attention for the rest of the hour.
FAQ: U7 Warm-Up Questions
Should U7 players do stretching?
No. Static stretching (holding a stretch) is not recommended for children under 7. Their bones and muscles are still developing and are naturally flexible. Dynamic movement (running, jumping, hopping) is much better and safer.
How long should the warm-up be?
Keep it under 10 minutes. At this age, the line between “warm-up” and “drill” is blurry. Just get them moving and smiling, then transition quickly to the main activity.
What if players arrive late?
This is why games like “Jungle Trek” or “Hospital Tag” are perfect. A late player can just run onto the field and join the game instantly without stopping the session to explain rules.
Bonus: The “Animal Walk” Dynamic Warm-Up
If you want to get their muscles moving without the ball (Dynamic Stretching), don’t ask them to “do high knees.” They won’t understand. Use animals instead.
- Cheetah Run: Run on toes with high knees (High Knees).
- Flamingo Walk: Lift one knee up and hug it, then step (Glute stretch).
- Frog Jumps: Squat down and jump high (Squats/Plyometrics).
- Crab Walk: Walk on hands and feet with tummy facing up (Upper body strength).
- Airplane: Stand on one leg and lean forward with arms out (Balance/Hamstrings).
Coach Tip: Do this for just 2 minutes between the “Arrival Game” and the main session. Remember: These can be used in specific conditions (to cold etc.). I highly recommend using the ball as much as you can in every drill for U7 category! Always & everything with the ball!
A Note to Coaches: Be the Inventor
These 5 drills are fantastic starting points, but they are just the tip of the iceberg. As a U7 coach, your best tool isn’t a drill book—it’s your imagination.
You don’t need to memorize 100 complex exercises. You just need to take games the kids already love (like Hide and Seek, Duck Duck Goose, or What’s the Time Mr. Wolf) and add a soccer ball.
- Is “Tag” getting boring? Rename it “Alien Invasion.”
- Is “Follow the Leader” stale? Turn it into “Pilot and Airplane.”
Don’t be afraid to invent new games on the spot or tweak these rules to fit your team’s personality. Remember: If the kids are moving, sweating, and smiling, you have created a perfect warm-up.
Good Luck and Happy Coaching!
