Understanding the 4v1 Rondo Structure
The 4v1 rondo is a dynamic and engaging soccer drill designed to enhance player skills and teamwork. This exercise takes place in a 10×10 grid, accommodating five players. The objective is simple: one defender tries to intercept the ball from the four attacking players, promoting quick decision-making and ball movement.
Setting Up the Drill
Begin by organizing players into a 10×10 grid. Select four players to be the attackers and one to be the defender. The defenders will rotate every minute, allowing all players to participate in both attacking and defensive roles. Note that each player is allowed only two touches on the ball, which helps improve their first touch and passing accuracy.
Executing the Drill Effectively
In the execution of the 4v1 rondo, players should focus on their first touch across their body, allowing for a smoother transition to their inside foot when passing. A successful pass sequence of five will score a point, motivating players to maintain high-quality passes and constant movement. Coaches should emphasize the quality of each pass, the necessary angles of support, and the importance of positioning to ensure the successful transition of the ball.

Organization:
10×10 grids
5 players per grid – add defender
1 ball in play- spares outside the grid
Instructions:
Each player has 2 touches
1st touch across the body to the back foot
2nd touch is inside foot pass to next player
Defender in for 1 minute – 5 passes = point
Coaching:
Quality of pass, quality of 1st touch
Movement to support the ball – angles of support to left & right
Timing of movement
Body position as player moves
Tempo
Encourage defender to ‘be an animal’. Their pressure helps the 4 possessing players learn the how, when, why
Conclusion: Implementing the 4v1 rondo in training sessions enhances not only ball control and passing accuracy but also fosters teamwork among players. Incorporating small sided games into practice encourages creativity and adapts well to the natural flow of soccer, making the game more enjoyable and productive.
