Elevate your players’ ball possession, transition play, and finishing skills with this dynamic 8v8 Small-Sided Game (SSG)! This engaging session, condenses essential elements of the beautiful game into a 20-30 minute drill, adaptable to various age groups and skill levels. The drill emphasizes decision-making under pressure, creating a realistic training environment for players.

Drill Organization:

  • Pitch Size: Minimum 50×30 meters (adjustable based on age, skill level, and training goals).
  • Equipment: 4 small goals (2 on each side of the pitch).
  • Players: 16 players divided into two teams (Red and Blue).
  • Playing Area: The pitch is divided into three zones: a left zone (10 meters), a central zone (30 meters), and a right zone (10 meters).

Drill Set-Up:

SSG 8vs8 - Ball Possession Under Pressure, Transitions & Finish
  • Initially, 3 players from each team position themselves in their respective zones (left, center, right).
  • The remaining 10 players (6 Blue and 4 Red) are positioned in the central zone, creating a 6v4 possession scenario for the Blue team.
  • Two Red players wait outside the playing area on each side (left and right), ready to join the action.

Drill Process:

  1. Blue Team Possession: The drill begins with the Blue team practicing ball possession in the central zone (6v4 scenario).
  2. Attacking Transition: Upon the coach’s signal, the Blue team initiates an attacking transition to either the left or right zone.
  3. Creating a 3v2 Advantage: Two Blue players from the central zone join the teammate in the chosen attacking zone, creating a 3v2 situation against the two waiting Red defenders.
  4. Attacking the Goals: The Blue team aims to score in the small goal on the chosen side (left or right).
  5. Red Team Wins Possession: If the Red team wins the ball in any zone, they are required to quickly transition the ball to their waiting teammates on the flanks (left or right).
  6. Red Team Attack: Similar to the Blue team, the Red team attempts to score in the small goal using a 3v2 advantage (created by the two waiting Red players joining the action on the side where they win the ball).
  7. Reset and Repeat: After a goal is scored or the ball goes out of play, the drill resets with the opposite team starting possession in the central zone.

Coaching Cues:

  • Sharp Passing: For the team in possession (Blue or Red), emphasize crisp and accurate passing to maintain control and create scoring opportunities.
  • Quick Decisions: Encourage players to make quick decisions under pressure, especially during transitions.
  • Movement and Support: Promote intelligent movement and support runs to create passing options and attacking opportunities.
  • Defending Shape: For the defending team, focus on maintaining a compact defensive shape and making it difficult for the attacking team to break through.

Variations you can use:

  • Time Limit for Possession: Introduce a time limit (e.g., 5 seconds) for the team in possession (central zone) to force quicker decision-making and transition play.
  • Limited Touches: Implement a limited touch rule (e.g., 2 touches) in all zones to encourage faster ball movement and passing.
  • Zone Restrictions: Restrict specific zones (e.g., left and right zones) for the initial possession phase to challenge players to build possession through different areas of the pitch.

Remember to adjust the difficulty and variations based on your players’ age, skill level, and training objectives.
