Elevate your team’s attacking prowess with the dynamic Rondo 5 vs 3 to Transition – 4 vs 3 (Crossing & Finishing) drill! This engaging session, designed for players aged 13 and above , seamlessly blends possession practice with attacking transitions, refining key skills in just 20-30 minutes.

Here’s a breakdown of the drill’s organization, process, and coaching cues:

Organization:

  • Set up two rectangular “rondo boxes” on opposite sides of the pitch, each measuring approximately 15 meters x 10 meters.
  • Divide your players into two teams: 6 players (Yellow) and 6 players (Red).
  • In one rondo box, designate the Red team for a 5 vs 3 possession drill against the Yellow team.
  • Position two players from each team (Red and Yellow) outside their respective rondo boxes, waiting for the transition.
  • One Yellow player stands in the center of the midfield, and another positions themselves inside the opposite rondo box.

Drill Process:

  1. Rondo Possession: The drill begins with the designated team (Red in this example) playing a 5 vs 3 possession drill within their assigned rondo box.
  2. Transition Trigger: Once the team in possession (Red) completes a set number of successful passes (e.g., 5 passes) without interception, a transition is triggered.
  3. Attacking Transition: The team in possession (Red) transitions into a 4 vs 3 attacking scenario. One Red player exits their rondo box (simulating an attacking run) and cannot return until the next round.
  4. Crossing and Finishing: The remaining Red players prioritize crossing the ball into the opposite rondo box towards the open teammate who exited earlier (Yellow player positioned in the box).
  5. Finishing Practice: The receiving Yellow player attempts a first-time finish or controls the ball and takes a shot on goal.
  6. Reset and Repeat: After a successful attack or a turnover, the drill resets. The team that conceded the goal (Yellow in this example) retrieves the ball and initiates the 5 vs 3 possession drill in their designated rondo box. The roles then switch, with Yellow becoming the attacking team in the next transition.
