Elevate your team’s finishing prowess with a drill inspired by AC Milan’s attacking tactics! This engaging exercise, mimicking a real-game scenario involving Theo Hernandez, refines passing combinations, movement, and clinical finishing in a dynamic attacking session.
Drill Set-Up:
- Equipment: Football, cones (4 for mannequins, 3 for numbered passing sequence).
- Players: Multiple players (demonstrated with 3 players).
- Playing Area: Open space suitable for attacking drills.
Drill Breakdown (Inspired by AC Milan’s attacking play):
The drill replicates a real-match scenario where Theo Hernandez makes a deep attacking run to exploit space created by his teammate Olivier Giroud, with a pass from Rafael Leรฃo.
Step 1: Initiating the Attack (Cones 3 & 1)
- Player 3 (central position) initiates the drill by passing the ball to Player 1 (near the mannequins representing defenders).
Step 2: Creating Space & Laying Off (Cone 1 & 2)
- Player 1 receives the pass, momentarily holds his position near the defenders, and then moves slightly forward to create space.
- Player 1 quickly lays the ball off to Player 2 (who should be positioned wider on the pitch near the sideline).
Step 3: Delivering the Final Ball & Attacking the Space (Cone 2 & 3)
- Player 2 receives the ball, opens up his body towards the goal, and plays a direct pass into the central channel.
- Player 3, anticipating the pass from Player 2, attacks the space vacated by Player 1 (who created space by moving forward).
Step 4: 1v1 Finishing (Player 3)
- Player 3 receives the pass in a 1v1 situation against a goalkeeper and attempts to score.

Coaching Cues:
- Sharp Passing: Emphasize crisp and accurate passing throughout the sequence, focusing on weight and direction.
- Movement and Timing: Encourage intelligent movement to create space and receive passes effectively. Player 1’s initial hold-up play and run are crucial elements.
- Attacking Awareness: For Player 3, stress the importance of anticipating the final pass and attacking the space behind the created by Player 1’s movement.
- Clinical Finishing: Guide players to focus on proper finishing technique and composure when presented with a goalscoring opportunity.
Variations:
- Vary Defender Numbers: You can adjust the number of mannequins (defenders) to simulate different defensive situations.
- Introduce a Neutral Player: Include a neutral player mimicking the role of Olivier Giroud to create a more realistic attacking scenario.
- Timed Runs: Implement timed runs from Player 3 to challenge them on attacking the space at the precise moment.
Benefits:
- Refines players’ passing accuracy and technique in an attacking context.
- Develops attacking movement, spatial awareness, and anticipation.
- Sharpens finishing skills under pressure.
- Enhances tactical awareness by replicating real-game attacking scenarios.
Remember, adapting this kind of drills to suit your team’s specific needs and skill levels is essential.
